It is the fifth most common cancer in the world and the third leading cause of cancer deaths. It is more common in men.

Symptoms of Stomach Cancer:

There are many symptoms of stomach cancer. These stomach cancer signs may also appear initially. Stomach cancer can be difficult to detect in the early stages. This is the reason why most patients are diagnosed after the disease has progressed.

  • Burping
  • Abdominal or chest pain or burning sensation
  • Vomiting (which may contain blood).
  • These are warning signs such as
  • Rapid weight loss or being sick with indigestion
  • Anemia. Generally, people feel tired and short of breath.
  • These symptoms appear when the cancer is more advanced.
  • Feeling full of water in the stomach or lumps in the stomach.
  • Anemia means a lack of blood
  • Black stools or blood with heavy urination
  • Cheapness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Losing weight
  • People at increased risk of cancer include:
  • People who have stomach acid or stomach ulcer or constant upset stomach
  • Long-term smokers have double the risk of stomach cancer
  • A close family member has stomach cancer
  • People who eat more salt, pepper, and spicy things have a higher risk of stomach cancer.
  • The risk of stomach cancer usually increases after the age of 50.
  • Men have a higher risk of stomach cancer than women.
  • Obesity

Diagnosis of Gastric Cancer/Stomach Cancer

Different types of tests are done to diagnose stomach cancer.

  • Endoscopy:

A fiber optic camera is inserted inside the stomach. Sometimes a test is also done by taking some tissues, i.e. a piece of flesh from inside, called a biopsy.

  • Ultrasound:

Abdominal ultrasound helps in diagnosis.

  • Barium Mail X-ray:

In this, the patient is given a colored liquid containing a chemical called barium. It allows easy visualization of the stomach on X-rays but is less useful than test endoscopy.

  • CT Scan:

Through CT scan, pictures of the internal parts of the body are taken and it is seen in which part of the body there is cancer and at what level cancer has reached.

Treatment of Stomach Cancer:

The treatment of stomach cancer depends on the nature of the disease and the health of the patient. Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and drugs.

  • Surgery:

It has three forms:

If the disease is in the early stages, complete treatment is possible through surgery.

Along with the removal of cancerous tumors from the patient's stomach, the surrounding healthy cells are also cleaned.

  1. A part of the stomach is removed.
  2. The entire stomach is removed.

  • Radiation:

In radiotherapy, cancer cells are destroyed by energy rays. But abdominal radiation is not usually done because of the risk of damaging the internal organs. Radiotherapy is also used if the disease is very advanced, painful, or bleeding.

  • Chemotherapy:

Chemotherapy is used to cease cancer cells from growing. This drug spreads throughout the patient's body and destroys cancer wherever it is. It is usually given before and after surgery. It sometimes shrinks the size of the tumor. This method is very powerful for stomach cancer treatment.

  • Symptomatic treatment:

This is for patients whose disease and the tumor have spread throughout the body. In this case, only the patient's symptoms are treated.
